Learn how storyboards can help develop your next story.
-
From a quick sketch, to a full-colour frame, storyboards create an immediate sense of the story you are communicating. This means clients, creatives and even an audience can understand your script in the early stages of the creative process. Storytelling clarity is essential for keeping creative teams on the same page.
With well designed storyboards, storytelling problems such as lack of continuity due to poor visual rhythm can be solved earlier in the production process. This allows you to better plan for your needs and budget moving forward. Strong storyboards provide a blueprint for animators, 2D and 3D digital artists, producers and writers to focus on delivering their best work.
Storyboards are an early glimpse into the exciting possibilities of your production. -
Hand-drawn storyboards are the first visual step to creating an honest, human connection between your story and an audience.
The organic action found in each hand-drawn line brings your story to life with genuine emotion. To create an original, inspired production that resonates with people, it’s essential for a human touch to be present at every stage of the creative process. -
While every project is different, it’s always important to have a clear understanding of your story before I begin drawing. This will ensure the storyboards are best able to meet your expectations.
After the initial brief, my process will usually begin with thumbnail sketches. These rough drawing are grouped together for ease of readability. Here you can see the storyboard in full; the flow of your story. This is is the best time to amend frames if need be, as they are at their loosest.
Once you happy to proceed, I’ll tighten up the frames depending on the finish you’re after. For a production, preserving the energy of the thumbnail sketch is often key for continuity, so developing frames to look fast and fluid becomes the goal.
Otherwise, for commercials and advertising a more illustrative look is often needed. Here the line-work is tighter and more polished for presentation.
Black and white storyboards are great at telling a story, but for more impact and stronger creative direction, colour or grey-tone can be applied, whether the frames are tight or loose.
Every story has different needs, so let’s discuss yours and find the right look! -
For over ten years, I have experience working across various types of productions – from short-form to long-form, advertising and commercials to TV shows. I can help you break down a fully realized script, or lay down frames for a 15” short.
